Summary
Unit 6 deals with thermotropic liquid crystal polymer (TLCP) melt spun aromatic polyester fibres. They are also known by other names, related to brands, such as Vectran. This high-performance fibre is used in numerous applications, that require its unique properties, including, sophisticated sail designs for the America’s Cup sailboats and the air bags used to land the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Pathfinder on Mars in 1997. Other applications are inflatable structures, ropes and cables for special marine, military and industrial uses, specialized electronic uses, the reinforcement of composite materials, protective clothing, sailcloth, reinforced hulls, fishing poles and lines, golf clubs, bicycle forks, skies, tennis rackets, snowboards and paragliders. This unit studies its production, characteristics, structure, properties and applications.
